Safety Week

During School Safety Week, our students had the opportunity to learn important safety lessons from several community partners. Our bus drivers did evacuation drills with our bus riders. The Columbiana Fire Department visited to discuss fire prevention safety, while Detective Whitfield from the Columbiana Police Department read stories to students emphasizing school safety and the importance of practicing fire, tornado, and lockdown drills. The CPD also assisted with our recent evacuation drill and will be helping with our upcoming lockdown drill as well. We are very fortunate to have such strong safety support helping to keep our students safe every day. Detective Whitfield also spoke with each grade level about DARE topics, including making safe choices, resisting peer pressure, decision-making, and personal responsibility. New this year, he introduced the Highlights/Google curriculum-Be Internet Awesome, focused on internet safety. He taught students key vocabulary and concepts that teachers will continue to build on in classroom lessons over the next several weeks. Looking ahead, we are excited to welcome State Trooper Joel Hughes in November to share bus safety strategies with our students. School Safety Week is just one way we ensure that our students learn to stay safe, make smart choices, and navigate their world responsibly.
