In order to assist the overwhelmed Columbiana County Health Department, the Columbiana School District has contracted with the department to add local contact tracing for quarantine purposes. Beginning November 23rd, Mrs. Costal will be employed as an extension of the Health Department and has the authority to quarantine individuals, who are determined to be close contacts to positive COVID19 cases in the school community. A new standard for quarantines has been issued by the health department. Any person who was in close contact, 15 cumulative minutes within 6 feet, with a positive COVID19 case 48 hours prior to the onset of symptoms of that case shall quarantine for 14 days from the last date of exposure. This standard will become a major factor in our ability to provide in person education in the coming weeks. If your child is experiencing any of the following symptoms: Fever, New Cough, Difficulty Breathing, Lost of Taste or Smell, Congestion, Diarrhea, Nausea/Vomiting, Sore Throat, Headache, or Muscle Weakness, please do not send them to school and seek medical attention. Coming to school with any of these symptoms puts others at risk of the virus and produces unnecessary quarantines for staff and other students. It additionally weakens our ability to provide instruction in person. We are asking parents to consider self-quarantining your child if you, their primary caregiver, is experiencing symptoms that could result in a positive COVID19 case. We understand the complexity of the circumstances and will provide remote education in a self-quarantine scenario. The only way that we will be able to sustain education in person is that when you or your child are sick is to stay away from the school. We appreciate your consideration and assistance with navigating through the pandemic.
The Columbiana School District has been notified of three additional COVID19 cases coming from a family with a student in each school building. Families with students of a close contact have been notified, and additional information specific to COVID-19 cases within the school district will NOT be released, in cooperation with privacy laws. Due to the increased cases and quarantines at South Side Middle School, GRADE 8 will move to a remote format next week (Monday & Tuesday). Positive cases and quarantines continue to weaken our ability to provide an in-person education. We re-evaluate the community spread of the disease daily and will consider the data through the Thanksgiving break in order to make determinations about our ability to provide an in-person instruction moving into December. Parents: Please prepare for the possibility of a hybrid or remote schedule. A hybrid or remote option may be necessary in order to increase the separation of students and reduce the number of students quarantined from positive COVID19 cases. Your building principals have communicated these schedules and will provide a reminder linked to the building web-page. Although we wish to continue our schools’ educational programs in as normal a fashion as possible, we will need to consider alternative educational formats dependent upon the spread in the greater Columbiana School District’s families. We live in a day and age where most people are on some form of social media. Anyone who has a social media account knows how quickly a post can spread in a matter of seconds. While the First Amendment allows for free speech, everyone needs to be mindful of what he or she is posting/commenting through a social media platform. Parents, please remind your children who are on social media, that posts/comments can work their way into the school district and lead to disciplinary action and even a police referral. The middle school and high school has had several issues regarding social media posts and is addressing these issues thoroughly and directly. One such issue has been investigated and addressed by the Columbiana Police Department. Our food supervisor, Mrs. Minamyer, notified the district office today that the USDA has extended free meals for kids beginning tomorrow though December 31,2020. September 8, 2020 Dear School Community, The Columbiana Exempted Village School District is committed to the safety and health of our students and staff. We want to inform you that that we have recently received information about at least one confirmed case of COVID-19 in a student at Josha Dixon Elementary School. Cleaning and disinfecting of the exposed classrooms have been completed. Joshua Dixon Elementary will remain open at this time. We are working closely with Columbiana County Health Department and anyone identified as a close contact will be notified by the health department as a part of COVID-19 investigation. How You Can Help: Be proactive about reducing the number of interactions that students and staff have with one another by practicing social distancing (staying at least 6 feet apart) to limit the spread of COVID-19. In addition to physical distancing, these important tools help to prevent the spread of COVID-19: • Stay home when you are sick. • Wear a mask or face covering while in public places or if people who don’t live with you must visit your home. • Avoid unnecessary gatherings with people who don’t live in your home. • Avoid sharing food, drinks, or utensils. • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use alcohol-based hand sanitizers that contain at least 60% alcohol. • Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue, and then dispose of the tissue and wash your hands immediately. If you do not have a tissue, use your sleeve, not your hands, to cover coughs and sneezes. If you are experiencing cough or congestion, consider staying home and seeking medical care. • Regularly clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends cleaning of frequently touched surfaces with household cleaners and EPA-registered disinfectants that are appropriate for the surface, following label instructions. Columbiana Clipper School Community Message: This is a message to notify you that one of our elementary parents has informed the district of a presumed case of COVID19 with their child. The presumed case is asymptomatic and will be quarantined as directed by the Columbiana County Health Department. Mrs. Sharshan and school nurse, Mrs. Costal, have notified staff and the parents of students who may be contacted by the Health Department for further contact tracing and the need to quarantine. The Columbiana Health Department determines who needs to quarantine. All classrooms and areas have been thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. The potential spread has been narrowed by the self-contained classrooms in our Pre-K – 8 building plans for mitigating the virus. Face masks, daily thermal temperature scans, hand sanitizing stations, mandatory hand washing, and continued use of electrostatic disinfecting devices will be key to minimizing spread in the schools. Thank you to our parents who promptly assisted the district with reporting this presumed case, as identified in our district ReEntry Plan. It is important that parents continue to monitor students for well-being and for potential symptoms. Dear Parents of fall extra-curricular activities students: The Columbiana School District has partnered with QUICKMED Urgent Care to offer COVID19 testing and pre-participation physicals on July 8th for any student entering grades 7-12 that will be returning to school for activities this summer for the fall extra-curricular programs. QUICKMED will not charge a fee, copay or co-insurance for families, but your insurance provider will be billed for testing. For those that do not have insurance, QUICKMED has agreed to cover the cost of the testing at their expense. Results for live virus take on average 48 hours, with antibody testing being resulted on site in 10 minutes. Physicals: Free Pre-Participation Physicals will also be provided to any student-athlete or marching band member who needs a physical for the 2020-21 school year. For those students who do not want to be tested, QUICKMED will charge $20 for the pre-partition physicals. The pre-participation physicals are free for those students participating in the COVID19 testing process. The federal Families First Coronavirus Response Act of 2020 provides the Secretary of Agriculture authority to approve states’ implementation of a temporary program called Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT). P-EBT provides a benefit to all families eligible for free and reduced-price meals, whether through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or an income eligibility application, in the amount of $5.70 for each day a school is closed due to COVID-19. With schools closed through the end of the school year, this benefit is estimated to equate to $300 per child for a total of approximately $215 million for students and families in Ohio. Benefits are provided on an electronic benefit transfer (EBT) card that is mailed to families, which can be used to buy food at local grocery stores. Children who are eligible for free and reduced-price meals or SNAP may receive this benefit. This includes all students who are enrolled at schools participating in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP). The program is administered by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. The Ohio Department of Education partners with that agency to ensure children and families receive this important benefit. Ohio has received preliminary approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for implementation. Please note that schools serving meals during the ordered school-building closure may continue to operate pandemic feeding programs while participating in P-EBT. This is a message from Mahoning County Public Health. This message was requested of us to passed along to our families. The United States, Ohio, and our Tri-County area are being impacted by the COVID-19 virus. The virus spreads through a community by close contact with those who are ill with the virus. We all have the potential to contract, carry, and spread the virus when not yet experiencing any symptoms to when experiencing mild symptoms. In order to prevent the further spread of COVID-19 it is very important that we all do our part and follow these public health measures: • Stay at home when you are sick and contact your health care provider for a medical evaluation. • Wash your hands on a routine basis with soap and water for 20 seconds or more. • Refrain from touching your face. • Only leave your house for essential needs and supplies such as groceries. • Create a list when shopping, send one person when possible, and buy enough supplies for 14 days. • Check on those who are elderly and shop for their essential needs. You may drop items off on their door step and should not visit at this time. • Keep your children at home and prevent them from playing with others. Children can contract the virus and pass it to others. We are all impacted by this challenging event but by doing your part you will help prevent the spread of COVID-19 as well as saving lives.

District-Wide Information Regarding Breakfast/Lunch for K-12 Columbiana Students March 18, 2020 Starting Monday, March 23rd, using our regular bus routes, Columbiana Schools will deliver breakfast and lunch for all students K-12 at no cost. In order to collect information regarding delivery, we have created a survey that will need to be completed weekly. We are asking all families to complete the survey, each week, by Thursday at noon of the previous week. For the days indicated, we will deliver a lunch and breakfast to your child’s bus stop. Walkers and open enrollment students will still need to complete the survey, but will pick up lunches at their building. All other students will have delivery to (or near) your stop. Buses will leave the school each day at approximately 11:00 am. We anticipate runs lasting approximately an hour or so. Please have someone out for pickup as staff will hand lunches out from the bus. Those who have already responded to the survey do not need to do so again for the week of March 23rd. If you are interested in signing up it is not too late. We are asking you to complete the survey on a weekly basis by noon each Thursday for the following week. On Monday, classes will be closed for a teacher Professional Waiver Day to prepare for remote learning opportunities. Beginning Tuesday, March 17th, the Columbiana Schools will be closed per Governor DeWine's directives and classes will resume on April 6th. More detail to come.

Attention elementary parents: The Elementary building has been issued an all clear. The alarm was sounded due to two bad sensors. The alarm company will be out to fix the sensors while the fire department supervises and ensures the process is complete.
